Unlike other well-known highland routes, this route takes you to a much less traveled territory for mass tourism, where volcanic geology is the real protagonist. You’ll see the Lascar volcano, one of Chile’s most active volcanoes, up close, and you’ll get to know the Maar Cerro Overo, a rare volcanic crater virtually unknown to most visitors to San Pedro de Atacama. In addition, this tour combines nature, geology and local culture: we pass through Talabre and Toconao, highlands where the Atacameño tradition is still lived, and we reach Laguna Lejía, a mirror of water surrounded by volcanoes that rarely appears on traditional tourist circuits.
Talabre town (check-in): Ascent through the precordillera, to the town of Talabre (3,500 m.a.s.l.), where we check in and visit this traditional Atacameño town.
Talabre Viejo Viewpoint: Panoramic view of Talabre Viejo, an ancient Atacameño settlement of liparita stone and cultivation terraces, abandoned by the community to protect themselves from landslides.
Laguna Lejia Viewpoint: At 4,300 m.a.s.l., Laguna Lejía is a saline lagoon with turquoise waters surrounded by the Láscar, Aguas Calientes, and Acamarachi volcanoes, and is a refuge for Andean flamingos and vicuñas.
Salar de Aguas Calientes II: High mountain salt flat next to the La Pacana Caldera, where altiplano vegas and water mirrors fed by snowmelt create a unique Andean landscape.
Lascar Volcano Viewpoint (active): From a safe observation point, we view the Láscar volcano (5,590 m.a.s.l.), the most active in northern Chile, with its constant gas fumaroles.
Visit Pueblo de Toconao: Picturesque Atacameño town known for its liparita stone architecture, the bell tower of the Church of San Lucas, and its artisanal tradition.
Route: Travel time from San Pedro de Atacama to Toconao (vice versa) and Lunch time

San Pedro de Atacama is an adobe oasis town in northern Chile, ringed by salt flats, volcanoes, geysers and some of the driest desert on earth.
San Pedro de Atacama is a village of low whitewashed adobe houses and dusty streets in an oasis of the Atacama Desert, at about 2,400 metres. Its adobe church goes back to the 17th century and has a roof of cactus wood, and the small Museo Arqueológico Gustavo Le Paige displays mummies and pottery from the desert's early peoples. The cone of Licancabur volcano stands over the town to the east.
Top-ranked sights in San Pedro de Atacama: El Tatio Geysers, Moon Valley (Valle de la Luna), Chaxa Lagoon (Laguna Chaxa).
