1. The high plateau of Assi, also called Assy-Turgen, is located east of Almaty, just a hundred kilometers away. The plateau is located at an altitude of almost 3000 meters above sea level. 2. An observatory of astrophysics is built on the upper platform of the plateau, in which one of the world's largest telescopes is installed. The Assy-Turgen Observatory is an astronomical observatory 100 kilometers east of Almaty, on the high plateau of Assy-Turgen at an altitude of 2,750 meters above sea level, built by the Astrophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. Assy-Turgen is the only observatory in Kazakhstan with an ideal astroclimate.

About Almaty

Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city, set beneath the snow peaks of the Tian Shan, with leafy parks, Soviet-era monuments, cafés and mountain lakes nearby.

Almaty lies on a plain at the foot of the Trans-Ili Alatau, a range of the Tian Shan mountains, whose snowy peaks rise to the south. It was the capital of Kazakhstan until 1997, when the title passed to Astana, and it remains the largest city and the cultural centre. Wide avenues are shaded by poplars and elms, and Panfilov Park holds the brightly painted wooden Ascension Cathedral and a memorial to soldiers of the Second World War.
