Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, lies in a valley of the Inn River, with steep Alpine peaks rising directly behind its medieval old town.
Innsbruck sits in the broad Inn valley, so close under the limestone wall of the Nordkette range that cable cars carry people from the old town to the mountain slopes in minutes. Its arcaded streets lead to the Golden Roof, a balcony covered in gilded copper tiles, built around 1500 for Emperor Maximilian I.
