Almost four hundred years were employed by the Como workers for the construction of the Cathedral, started in 1396, whose facade is still one of the most remarkable examples of late Gothic in northern Italy. The splendid residence was commissioned at the end of the 1600s by the Marquis Giorgio Clerici, but it was with Gian Battista Sommariva, the next owner, that the villa reached its maximum splendor. He was responsible for transforming the garden into an extraordinary romantic park. In the mid-nineteenth century the property was donated to Carlotta of Prussia on the occasion of the wedding with George II of Sachsen-Meiningen; the latter, a botanical enthusiast, worked hard to enrich the vast landscaped garden. In April and May villa Carlotta offers an authentic sea of ​​multicolored azaleas, arranged in high rounded cushions along some paths.
