4. In the afternoon, board the little red cogwheel train to Glacier Mer de Glace. It takes about twenty minutes to climb the 1,000 meters up to the Montenvers-Mer de Glace attraction. The track climbs the mountainside running through the forest, tunnels cut through the rock and over viaducts. You enter the realm of the high mountains, and round the last bend you'll feel the magic: you've arrived at your destination at the foot of the famous Mer de Glace glacier, at an altitude of 1,913m.

5. Discover the famous village of Chamonix Mont Blanc: In 1924 Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympic Games. Skiing was introduced in Chamonix at the end of the 19th century by Dr Payot. Nowadays, Chamonix is the most famous mountain village and Mont Blanc the highest mount of Europe.

• 5Do try a day trip to Chamonix!

  We did not want a tour so we just had a driver. Chamonix is not very big - at the base of Mount Blanc, however, all is beautiful! it is easy to navigate the town on your own and views all around are spectacular! Shipping is very nice and good places to eat.

  A beautiful place to visit summer or winter. We did self-guided which was completely fine as the town was easy to navigate. A bit chaotic getting back on the return bus at the bus station as all buses show up at the same time for the full day tours.

About Geneva

Geneva is a lakeside city in French-speaking Switzerland, home to the Jet d'Eau, a hilltop Old Town, many international bodies and views of Mont Blanc.

Geneva lies at the western end of Lake Geneva, where the Rhône flows out toward France, with the Jura and the Alps on either side. The Jet d'Eau, a fountain that shoots water 140 metres into the air, marks the harbour. The Old Town climbs a hill to the Gothic Saint-Pierre Cathedral, where John Calvin preached, and the Reformation Wall in the Parc des Bastions shows its leaders in carved stone.
