A strong earthquake in 1953 levelled most of its towns, and many were rebuilt in a plainer style; Fiskardo, in the north, was spared and keeps its Venetian-style houses around a small harbour. Argostoli, the capital, has a long waterfront and a stone causeway bridge across its lagoon.
