The predecessor of today's bridge monkey sat grinning in the niche of the old monkey tower and greeted every stranger mockingly. The tower and figure sank into the depths of the Neckar when the city was destroyed. About Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a university town on the Neckar in south-west Germany, with a ruined red-sandstone castle, an old stone bridge and a long main street.

Heidelberg sits where the Neckar leaves its wooded valley and enters the Rhine plain in Baden-Württemberg. The castle above the old town, built in red sandstone and left half ruined by French armies in the 1690s and a lightning strike in 1764, holds the Great Tun, a barrel that can hold over 200,000 litres of wine. The Old Bridge, with its twin-towered gate, crosses the river, and the Hauptstrasse runs for over a kilometre through the pedestrian old town.
