This small parish extends into an area of 15.95 km2 and includes a minor population of 870 inhabitants (2001). It received its name, in the 20th century, but became more known, as the birthplace of the Portuguese poet and writer Miguel Torga, who lived in an isolated home in the parish. About Pinhão

Pinhão is a small river village in Portugal's Douro Valley, at the heart of the terraced port-wine vineyards, with a railway station covered in blue tiles.

Pinhão sits on the north bank of the Douro river in northern Portugal, where the steep valley sides are cut into terraces of vines. This is the heart of the Alto Douro Wine Region, where port is made, first marked out as a wine area in the eighteenth century and now listed by UNESCO. The railway station is covered with panels of blue-and-white azulejo tiles showing the grape harvest and local scenes, and trains of the Douro line run along the river.
