6. Baltimore's beloved mayor, William Donald Schaefer, got us the first national aquarium in America and Waterfront Partnership created a wetland right next to it. Baltimore, Maryland's port city on the Chesapeake Bay, is a city of brick rowhouses, harbourside museums and a fort that inspired the national anthem.

Baltimore, a long-time port on the Patapsco River near the Chesapeake Bay, spreads around its Inner Harbor, where an aquarium, tall ships and a science museum sit beside a promenade. Fort McHenry, at the harbour's mouth, was bombarded by British ships in September 1814 and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner. Nearby, the cobbled waterfront of Fells Point is lined with eighteenth-century buildings, pubs and restaurants.
