Mürren – a former settlement of people from the Lötschen valley in the Valais, which still remains recognisable today from the design of the houses and the pronunciation of the Mürren dialect – is the highest, continually inhabited village settlement in the canton of Bern and lies on a terrace at 1650 metres, high above the Lauterbrunnen valley. A double-cable ropeway leads up onto the plateau from Lauterbrunnen, while a cableway runs from Stechelberg, past turbulent waterfalls and craggy rock faces, into the centre of the car-free village of Mürren, and further to the Schilthorn at 2970 metres.

9. The Aare Gorge is a 1,400 m long and 200 m deep natural wonder. It takes around 45 minutes to walk through the imposing gorge – an easy and safe walk along walkways and through tunnels. With its constant cool temperature, the Aare Gorge is naturally refreshing – making it an ideal destination for a beautiful sunny day. When it rains, the gorge is very impressive with its mystical atmosphere and, at parts, large stretches of water.

About Interlaken

Interlaken sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the Swiss Alps, the base for the Jungfrau region's peaks, waterfalls, trains and adventure sports.

Interlaken lies on a flat strip of land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, which gave the town its name, with the Aare river running through it. A broad meadow, the Höhematte, faces the Jungfrau, a snow-covered peak often visible on clear days. The town grew in the 19th century as a resort, and grand hotels and a promenade, the Höheweg, remain from that time.
