We will travel up to the castle easily by funicular (or bus) where we will see: • Battery Park and Deer Moat - where the elector princes enjoyed hunting • Elisabeth Gate and the Hortus Palatinus - the 8th wonder of the world • Castle Courtyard - with the famed Ottheinrichsbuilding • German Pharmacy Museum - everything about medicine from the Middle Ages • The Big Barrel - with an incredible 60, 000 gallons, the largest wine barrel in the world

About Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a university town on the Neckar in south-west Germany, with a ruined red-sandstone castle, an old stone bridge and a long main street.

Heidelberg sits where the Neckar leaves its wooded valley and enters the Rhine plain in Baden-Württemberg. The castle above the old town, built in red sandstone and left half ruined by French armies in the 1690s and a lightning strike in 1764, holds the Great Tun, a barrel that can hold over 200,000 litres of wine. The Old Bridge, with its twin-towered gate, crosses the river, and the Hauptstrasse runs for over a kilometre through the pedestrian old town.
