  1. Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as "Chinese fishing nets" in India, the more formal name for such nets is "shore operated lift nets". Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20 m or more across. Each structure is at least 10 m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century.

The place is a coop laundry with a building set for ironing laundry, another with "cells" containing a concrete wash basin and a slab to slap the fabric during cleaning, and then a field of clothe lines. Each worker gets to set his own clothe line made of braided coir fiber. The strands are opened to set the clothes on the line without using pins. Everything is done by hand here and it is hard work. • 5Best sight seeing tour with shahir!

I had a wonderful experience on this tuk-tuk tour! My driver, Shahir, was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and organized the sightseeing so efficiently that we got to see so much without feeling rushed. On top of guiding me through the best spots, Shahir took some amazing photos for me, which really made the trip special and memorable. I highly recommend asking for Shahir if you want a smooth, fun, and picture-perfect tour!

  • 5Engaging and Informative Tour

Our guide took us to multiple brief stops of the main highlights of Fort Kochi. He is fluent in English and answered all of our questions. He also made a few stops based on what we wanted (cafe, tapestry hop, craft shop and pizza place). It was very personalized army my kids said it was one of the highlights of our time here in Kochi. Thank you, sir for making it a fun morning and getting us through a lot of the popular sites in the area.

  • 5Shibab makes Fort Kochi the most incredible experience!

This is the 2nd visit to Fort Kochi and 2nd time hiring Shibab Chibu as my driver/guide. His service is excellent. He met from the train, as It was late recommended a local place to get a bite to eat before taking us to our accommodation. The next day we we had a lovely blend on enjoying the Biennale Arts festival as well as the local sites. He had fantastic recommendations for food and was very knowledgeable about the local history. He made this part of the trip one of the most memorable and stress free chapters. I would highly recommend his services to anyone visiting Fort Kochi

  • 5Fantastic tour of Fort Kochi in tuk-tuks! Definitely recommend!

A group of us had a free day during our business trip and wanted to check out Fort Kochi so I looked for a Tuk-Tuk tour guide ahead of time instead of taking our chances when we arrived. We are so glad we did as Shahir, Shihab and their friend were amazing! Not only were they professional and polite, they were so much fun and shared so many stories and info about Fort Kochi. The tour was a great mix of historical sights and cultural moments with a few impromptu shopping moments in between. There is no way we would have had as good of a trip on our own, so do yourself a favor and book a tour with them!!

About Kochi

Kochi is a port city on India's Kerala coast, with Chinese fishing nets, Portuguese and Dutch heritage, spice warehouses and backwaters just beyond.

The old quarter of Fort Kochi packs centuries of trade into a small peninsula. Giant cantilevered fishing nets line the shore, St Francis Church is one of the oldest European-built churches in India, and Santa Cruz Basilica stands nearby. In Mattancherry, the Dutch Palace holds royal murals, and the Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town, dating from the 1500s, has a floor of blue Chinese tiles.
