1. We head towards Mylapore an ancient residential neighborhood of Chennai and a cultural hot spot today. It history goes back to Roman times when it used to trade pepper and fine cloth with Rome for Gold! It was occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later fell into the hands of the British till India’s independence in 1947. We visit the magnificent Kapaleeshwar temple. Built in the 7th century this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in Dravidian style architecture it has a towering “Gopuram”. Guests can expect a mesmerizing experience of rituals and serenity inside the temple.

2. Chennai City Tour takes us next to a unique monastic organization called Ramakrishna Mutt, dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna the 19th century saint. Guests will get to see the universal temple, the shrine, a beautiful Mantapam, a multimedia museum and an enchanting library.

3. We visit the famous San Thome Basilica, the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore. In the 10th century AD Christians from Persia, founded this Christian village of Santhome, and then they built a Church and tomb over the burial site of St.Thomas. Built in Neo gothic style, the present structure was built by the Portuguese explorers in the 16th century. The highlight of this Basilica are the relics of St Thomas himself.

4. The last leg of Chennai City Tour takes us to Fort Saint George, the first English Fortress built in 1644 by the East India Company. During this visit we will understand how the British came to dominate India , their rule and finally how India won its independence. We will visit St Mary’s Church, the oldest Anglican Church of India. We will also visit a quaint museum rich with relics of the colonial times.

About Chennai

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu on the Bay of Bengal, a city of temples, classical music, a very long beach and a colonial fort.

Chennai, formerly Madras, grew from Fort St George, which the British East India Company built in 1644 on the Coromandel coast and which now houses the state government. The city is spread along the Bay of Bengal beside Marina Beach, one of the longest urban beaches in the world. San Thome Basilica stands near the shore, built over what is believed to be the tomb of St Thomas the Apostle.
