1. Mountain Bisoke (3711m) lies on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. A dormant volcano, the mountain has a massive crater lake at the summit measuring about 400m in diameter and lies on the Rwandan side. This is the most popular of the trails and a must do for hiking enthusiasts. It is relatively strenuous but absolutely doable even for inexperienced hikers or climbers, requiring some basic fitness. There is a good number of habituated Mountain Gorillas in Mt. Bisoke and you stand a good chance of encountering these on your way up.

About Ruhengeri

Ruhengeri, also called Musanze, is a town in northern Rwanda below the Virunga volcanoes, the usual base for visiting the park's mountain gorillas.

Ruhengeri lies at about 1,850 metres in northern Rwanda, on a fertile plain below a line of volcanoes in the Virunga range. The town, also known as Musanze, is a market and transport centre in a region of potato fields and pyrethrum farms. Its cool, misty climate comes from the altitude, and the cone-shaped peaks of Bisoke, Karisimbi and Sabyinyo loom on the skyline.
