Your afternoon starts with a visit to Wray Castle for spectacular scenery and lake views. This is the holiday home where Beatrix first fell in love with the Lake District.
Close by Hill Top is Esthwaite Water where Beatrix walked while courting her future husband, William Heelis. This was a favourite spot for Beatrix who thought it "the most beautiful of the Lakes".
While on holiday, Beatrix visited many of the small villages in the area and Near Sawrey became her favourite. This village features in many of her "little books" illustrations. The Tower Bank Arms is immediately recognisable as the place where Kep, the collie-dog goes looking for the two fox-hound puppies to rescue Jemima Puddle-duck. You will be amazed when you see it, exactly like it is in the book! One of the reasons why Beatrix visited Near Sawrey so often was because while staying on holiday in the area, the Potter's coachman and his family were lodging at a farm there. That farm was Hill Top and is the one Beatrix later bought with the profits from publishing Peter Rabbit. She often visited her 'holiday home' Hill Top and wrote many more books here which were inspired by the people and the places around her in this beautiful part of England. We stop at Near Sawrey and Hill Top for you to see the locations which are so recognisable in the books and the place where Beatrix Potter lived. Entry to Hill Top IS included in the price of this tour. Our guide will take you on a short walk through the village, pointing out the various locations Beatrix used in her books.
This is where William Heelis had his solicitors office and known well to Beatrix Potter.

5Storybooks and scenery
Wonderful experience with Tim, our guide. His knowledge was extensive and he shared it on the most interesting fashion giving us in ties into Beatrix Potter that we would have missed with him. The lake cruise was a nice finish to the afternoon.

Lovely tone to the afternoon, well organised and insightful trip. Great way to tick off local BP related sites
5Tim was the most...
Tim was the most knowledgeable person I ever heard talk about Beatrix Potter. We even had people on the tour that didn’t know of her and by the end they were amazed at her and what a philanthropist she was. Thank you Tim for such a wonderful day
5Best tour I’ve ever done
The best tour I’ve ever done! I was the only person picked up at Bowness and I instantly felt welcomed and a part of the group. Our guide was full of knowledge and spoke calmly and clearly so you could take in everything comfortably while enjoying the gorgeous landscapes. He spoke on Beatrix Potter as well as other figures of influence in the Lakes district which had impacts on her life, even if it was a rather indirectly, which I felt gave a deeper insight to her life that I never knew about. He was also an excellent driver and I felt completely safe. I loved the locations we went to and had a good amount of time to see everything I wanted to see. The boat ride was really nice at the end of the day as it was fairly quiet so you could walk around and enjoy the views. I’ll absolutely be booking another tour the next time I’m in the lakes district and am even pitching doing this one again with my mum
5Must do!
this was this was an amazing tour… Tim was very knowledgeable and passionate about the story of Beatrix Potter. Not only did we learn about her house st Hill top, but her marital house that she bought across the street, as well as visited her parents vacation home they rented, which is really Palace. Beatrix Potter is an inspiration, an amazing woman of her time, challenging societal norms for women . She was an incredible visionary that protected this beautiful point town from development -Well worth it!
5Beatrix Potter half day tour
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our Beatrix Potter tour through the beautiful Lake District. Although the afternoon brought occasional rain and sprinkles, we were fortunate that most of our stops took place during the dry intervals, allowing us to fully appreciate the stunning scenery. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and shared fascinating stories about Beatrix Potter’s life, her inspiration, and her lasting legacy. The rolling green countryside, lined with traditional stone walls and fences, was every bit as picturesque as we had hoped. The highlight of the tour was visiting Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top House. Like the charming homes in her stories, it was surprisingly small but filled with an impressive collection of her original artwork, personal belongings, and beautiful porcelain pieces. We also enjoyed strolling through the lovely gardens, where a variety of flowers were still in bloom in early August. The tour concluded with a relaxing cruise on Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, providing a perfect ending to a memorable day. We highly recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys Beatrix Potter, English history, or the spectacular beauty of the Lake District.

About Windermere
Windermere is England's largest natural lake and the Lake District town beside it, with lake steamers, high fells and literary homes close by.
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, about seventeen kilometres long, its shores wooded and dotted with islands. The town of Windermere stands a little inland, and Bowness-on-Windermere on the water is the hub of boat life, with steamers and launches sailing to Ambleside at the head of the lake. A museum on the shore shows the lake's historic steam launches.
