About Manaus

Manaus is the Amazon's great river port, a rubber-boom city with an opera house, where the dark Rio Negro meets the pale Solimões.

Manaus rose on the rubber trade of the late nineteenth century, and the wealth of that era shows in the Teatro Amazonas, an opera house topped with a dome tiled in the colours of the Brazilian flag. The municipal market beside the port, with ironwork shipped from Europe, sells fish, fruit, herbs and handicrafts, and old floating docks line the waterfront.

Top-ranked sights in Manaus: Meeting of Waters (Encontro das Aguas), Amazon Theatre (Teatro Amazonas), Port of Manaus (Porto Flutuante).
