About Rouen

Rouen is the historic capital of Normandy on the Seine, a city of half-timbered streets, a great Gothic cathedral and the memory of Joan of Arc.

Rouen stands on a bend of the Seine, and its streets hold many half-timbered houses leaning over cobbled lanes. The Gothic cathedral, with its lacy west front, was painted by Claude Monet in a long series of canvases, each in a different light. The Gros-Horloge, a Renaissance arch carrying a big astronomical clock, spans the main street.

Top-ranked sights in Rouen: Joan of Arc Historial (Historial Jeanne d’Arc), Rouen Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts).
