일정
Arne Jacobsen's award-winning Mainz Rathaus (City Hall) - which is currently under renovation - is the starting point for this tour of modern Mainz.
The old part of the city has many modern fountains on picturesque public squares culminating in the impressive Fastnachtsbrunnen (Carnival Fountain) with more than 200 carnival figures. We will walk past modern sculptures and see Massimiliano Fuksas' modern building replacing the core of the old market houses.
Together with Speyer and Worms, Mainz was the centre of the Ashkenazi Judaism. We will see the award-winning modern synagogue by Manuel Herz (from the inside, if possible, otherwise from the outside).

About Mainz
Mainz is a Rhine city and the home town of Gutenberg, with a thousand-year-old red sandstone cathedral, Chagall's blue windows and Rheinhessen wine.
Mainz stands on the west bank of the Rhine where the Main river joins it, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate. St Martin's Cathedral, begun around 975, rises in red sandstone above the old town's market square. Johannes Gutenberg was born here, and the Gutenberg Museum displays original Bibles from his press, which launched printing with movable type in Europe around 1450.
Top-ranked sights in Mainz: Mainz Cathedral, St. Stephan’s Church (Stephanskirche).
