Puerto Rico is a US territory in the Caribbean, with a mountainous interior and beaches all around. Old San Juan, a small walled town of blue cobblestones, pastel buildings and Spanish forts, is part of a UNESCO site. Isla Verde, close to the airport, has a long beach lined with hotels and restaurants.

East of San Juan, El Yunque is a rainforest with waterfalls and tiny coquí frogs, and Luquillo has a beach and food kiosks. Fajardo is the port for the islands of Vieques and Culebra, with wild beaches, wild horses and the glowing waters of Mosquito Bay. Rincón on the west coast is a surf town, and Arecibo and Utuado, on the north coast and in the mountains, have caves, coffee farms and the Taíno ceremonial park of Caguana.

Mofongo, mashed fried plantain with garlic and pork, is the signature dish, with alcapurrias and pasteles, and roast pork at Christmas. The piña colada was born in San Juan, and rum is made on the island. Salsa and bomba drums are part of the island's identity. December to April is the most pleasant season, and hurricane season runs between June and November.
