Accra, the capital on the Gulf of Guinea, has Independence Square, the mausoleum of Kwame Nkrumah, the colourful Makola Market and the old fishing quarter of Jamestown with its lighthouse. Beaches fringe the city, and highlife and hiplife music pour out of its bars.

West along the coast, Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle are whitewashed forts that held captives before the Atlantic slave trade, now UNESCO World Heritage monuments. Nearby Kakum National Park has a canopy walkway among rainforest trees. Inland, Kumasi, the Ashanti capital, has the Manhyia Palace Museum and the sprawling Kejetia Market, and nearby villages weave kente cloth. In the north, Tamale is the base for Mole National Park, where elephants roam the savanna.

Jollof rice, fufu with light soup, banku with grilled tilapia and kelewele, spiced fried plantain, are among the best-known dishes, with shito, a dark pepper sauce, on the side. Ghana is also known for cocoa and chocolate. The dry season runs from November to March, with dusty harmattan haze in the middle of it, and the south has two rainy seasons.
