Most Fijians live on Viti Levu, the main island, where Suva, the capital on the south-east coast, has colonial buildings, a lively market and a museum of Fijian history. Nadi, on the west, has the international airport and the colourful Sri Siva Subramaniya Hindu temple, with the resort peninsula of Denarau joined to the coast by a causeway. Lautoka, further north, is a sugar port.
The Coral Coast and Pacific Harbour, on the south coast of Viti Levu, have rainforest waterfalls and the Beqa Lagoon, known for shark diving. Momi Bay, on the west coast, has old World War II gun batteries overlooking the water. Out in the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands lie small resort islands, and Savusavu on Vanua Levu is a quiet town on a natural harbour with hot springs.
Kokoda, raw fish in coconut milk with lime, onion and chilli, is a favourite, while lovo, a feast cooked in an earth oven, marks family occasions. Kava, a mildly numbing drink, is shared in bowls at welcome ceremonies. Curries and rotis come from the Indo-Fijian community. May to October is drier and cooler, and cyclones are a risk from November to April.
