This walking tour covers Gamle Stavanger's historic cobblestone lanes and includes several sections of steps, as well as noticeable uphill and downhill gradients — flat ground is limited mainly to the harbour area. As such, the tour is not suitable for wheelchairs (manual or powered) or mobility scooters. Stavanger is a harbour city in south-west Norway, with a wooden old town, a medieval cathedral, its oil history and the fjords of Rogaland beyond.

Stavanger stands on a peninsula in Rogaland, south-west Norway, with a harbour lined with warehouses, cafés and wooden buildings. Gamle Stavanger, the old town, has rows of white wooden houses on cobbled lanes, and the cathedral, begun in the 12th century, is among the oldest in Norway. Oil discoveries in the North Sea from the 1960s made Stavanger the country's oil capital, a story told in the Norwegian Petroleum Museum on the waterfront.
