This colossal structure was constructed in 1924 and is located at the tip of Apollo Bunder, and overlooks the Mumbai harbour, bordered by the Arabian Sea.The Gateway of India was constructed to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay (Mumbai) facing the majestic Hotel Taj Mahal. It is also the departing point for ferries plying to Elephanta Island famed for the cave temple sculpted out of rocks and a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.

The building is under the ownership of Gandhi Smarak since 1955 and it became a worthy memorial to Mahatma Gandhi and all the facets of the Indian independence movement. Now, a memorial which houses a library, picture gallery and memorabilia, Mani Bhavan is a museum which is open between 9. 30 am and 6 pm. Mani Bhavan was the focal point of the political activities of Mahatma Gandhi during the years 1917 and 1934. It witnessed the four-day fast conducted by Mahatma Gandhi back in 1921, to restore peace in Mumbai. It was in Mani Bhavan that Gandhiji started his association with the 'charkha' or spinning wheel. The initiations of noted agitations like the Civil Disobedience, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi and Khilafat movements took place in this historical building. Mani Bhavan takes us back to the political struggles.
