The Lisbon Cathedral, or Santa Maria Maior Cathedral, is located in the city of the same name, in Portugal. It is the seat of the Patriarchate of Lisbon and the Parish of the Cathedral. Its construction began in the second half of the 12th century.
The National Pantheon-Church of Santa Engrácia, the only example of Baroque in Portugal, stands in front of the Tagus, overlooking the historic area of the city, being an unmissable reference in the Lisbon skyline.
Downtown is the historic heart and commercial center of Lisbon. Its neoclassical architecture, built following the 1755 earthquake, surrounds Praças do Comércio and Rossio. The busy pedestrian streets are lined with traditional seafood restaurants and souvenir shops.
The steep streets of Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest areas, are full of traditional craft shops and cafes. The historic tram no. 28, packed with passengers, winds through Alfama and climbs to the 11th-century São Jorge Castle. The views from Miradouro da Graça extend over the city and the Tagus River. The Ruins of the Roman Theater, or Ruins of the Roman Theater dedicated to Nero, are located on the southern slope of São Jorge Castle, in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, formerly in the extinct parish of Sé, in Lisbon. The theater was built in the 1st century, during the time of the Roman emperor Augustus.
