Dianna Gabaldon is said to have taken inspiration from this location for the Outlander series.

5. Urquhart Castle – Urquhart Castle, better known to Outlander fans as the spot where Claire sees the Water Horse dates back to the 13th Century.

6. Beauly Priory – Beauly Priory is one of three priories founded in Scotland in about 1230 for monks of the Valliscaulian order. Outlander Fans will know this is where Claire nursed Jamie back to health after the battle and where they both embarked on their voyage to France.

7. Wardlaw Mausoleum – On the end of the original Parish Church, the mausoleum was built as a burial place for the Lovat Frasers in 1634. No admission fee but a donation is asked to be made.

About Inverness

Inverness is the Highland capital on the River Ness, close to Loch Ness, Culloden battlefield, ancient cairns and the dolphins of the Moray Firth.

Inverness stands where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth, with a red sandstone castle on a bluff above the river and the wooded Ness Islands, linked by footbridges, a short stroll upstream. The city is the capital of the Highlands and the northern end of the Great Glen, the fault valley that runs south-west to Fort William. The Victorian cathedral of St Andrew stands on the river bank.
