The 196 km Shimanto River is one of Japan's last remaining undammed rivers, famous for its clear water, unspoilt surroundings and distinctive chikabashi submersible bridges, built to withstand flooding. Enjoy the region’s incredible natural beauty as you journey from the headwaters of the mighty river all the way along the lowly flowing river to the Pacific Ocean. It is a wonderful way to glimpse the lives of people who have long lived in harmony with nature in an environment largely unchanged for centuries.

行程
After meeting your guide at JR Kubokawa Station, you will take a local train running along the Shimanto River and enjoy the view of the valley from the windows. Time passes quickly on the train as the river flow changes every time it goes through tunnels, making you marvel at the scenery. After getting off the train, you will rent a bicycle and ride along the river for about 20 to 25 km. Not only feeling the atmosphere of the Shimanto River Valley, you may also meet people living in harmony with nature as you pass through the villages along the valley. Upon return, you will also take a local train to JR Kubokawa Station.
After returning to JR Kubokawa Station, you will stroll around the town and stop at Iwamoto-ji Temple, one of the temples on the pilgrimage. This temple is taking various new approaches, such as incorporating modern art, to make it a place where people of all ages and genders can gather.
