You can also see the Cordillera Central of the island, including the two highest peaks, Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, as well as, on a clear day, the cliff of Penha D'Águia.

7. The Centro de Casas Tradicionais de Santana features some of Santana's typical houses. We also visited typical inhabited houses. Close to Santana City Hall is the Santana Traditional Houses Center. It is a preservation area, expanded by the municipality of Santana, in memory of the local heritage. Here we find some typical Santana houses, all adapted to current use, where you can buy a wide variety of local products and traditional handicrafts.

About Funchal

Funchal is the capital of Madeira, a Portuguese island in the Atlantic, set on steep green hills with flower-filled gardens and a seafront old town.

Funchal spreads up a steep hillside above a natural harbour on Madeira's south coast. The old town, the Zona Velha, has narrow lanes with painted doors and small restaurants, and the cathedral dates from around 1500. The Mercado dos Lavradores sells tropical fruit, fish and flowers in a hall decorated with blue tiles. A cable car climbs from the harbourfront to Monte, high above.
