It was inaugurated on November 4, 1877[1] and was closed on June 24, 1991, having been replaced by Ponte de São João.[2] It is considered, along with the Garabit Viaduct, as the greatest masterpieces executed by engineer Gustave Eiffel.[3] At the time of its inauguration, it was the bridge with the largest iron arch in the world.[4] It has been classified as a National Monument since 1982.[5]
