The centre of the modern city is dominated from the rocky crag known as the Acropolis. The Temple of Olympian Zeus found in the southeast of Athens is also referred to as Olympieion. Its construction lasted several centuries, from 510 BC to 131 AD and it is one of the greatest ancient temples of Zeus as well as one of the most famous marble buildings ever erected in the ancient world. There were originally 104 gigantic Corinthian columns 16 of which remain standing today, with one of them lying on the ground.
