It is also the centre of Sikhism and the site of the Sikhs' principal place of worship—The Harmandir Sahib, or Golden Temple. Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh guru. Jallianwala Bagh preserved in the memory of those wounded and killed in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre that occurred on the site on the festival of Vaisakhi, 13 April 1919.

About Amritsar

Amritsar is the Sikh holy city of Punjab, built around the gold-domed Golden Temple and its community kitchen, close to the Pakistan border.

Amritsar was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das around a sacred pool, and at its centre the Harmandir Sahib, known as the Golden Temple, rises from the water with a gilded dome.
