These water holes or "cenotes" have a great cultural and historical importance as they were considered sacred by the ancient mayans who believed they were the entrance to the underworld. They also feature stunning rock formations that took millions of years to form and numerous fossils in the walls as witnesses of time. The cenotes provide fresh water to many communities and are necessary to keep the natural equilibrium of the Yucatan peninsula.
