Jerusalem's Old City is divided into four quarters and holds the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre within a short walk of one another, with the Mahane Yehuda market and the Israel Museum, home of the Dead Sea Scrolls, in the modern city. Tel Aviv lies on the coast, with a long beach promenade, Bauhaus-style buildings in the White City and the old port of Jaffa.
Haifa climbs Mount Carmel, with the terraced Bahá'í Gardens, and Nazareth has the Basilica of the Annunciation. Tiberias lies on the Sea of Galilee, Herzliya has beaches and a marina, and Ashdod is a port south of Tel Aviv. In the south the Negev desert stretches to Eilat on the Red Sea, with coral reefs, and Sde Boker is a desert kibbutz near the Ein Avdat canyon. The Dead Sea, the lowest land on Earth, lies in the east.
Hummus, falafel, shakshuka and fresh salads with tahini make the everyday table, and markets sell olives, spices, halva and fresh bread. Wine is made in the hills of Galilee. The green, mild months of spring suit the north, the coast is hot in summer, and winter brings rain to the hills.
